Mark I. Piland is the Fire Chief for the City of Frisco, Texas, a CFAI Accredited Department and the fastest growing city in the U.S. Previously, Chief Piland served as the Fire Chief for Volusia County Fire Services in Volusia County Florida and as a Shift Commander in Operations for the Virginia Beach Fire Department in Virginia Beach VA. He also served 16 years on Virginia Task Force 2, a FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Team as Task Force Leader, East Coast Task Force Leader Representative, as well as Incident Support Team Leader for the Federal US&R system with deployments to the Pentagon during 911, Hurricane Katrina, and the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Chief Piland possess a Master of Public Health with a concentration in Hospital Management from Eastern Virginia Medical School, and a Bachelor of Psychology from Old Dominion University. Chief Piland is a graduate of the National Fire Academy 's Executive Fire Officer Program, the Executive Leader Program at the Naval Postgraduate School Center for Homeland Defense and Security, and the Senior Executives in State and Local Government at the Kennedy School at Harvard. |

Tourism in Frisco Update

Marla has been in the hospitality industry for over 35 years, spending her first 9 years in the hotel industry and the remainder working at two different DMO’s in the Dallas area. She is currently the Executive Director of Visit Frisco, and in March celebrated her 15 year anniversary with the City. Marla has achieved her CDME certification through Destinations International, and Visit Frisco is a DMAP (Destination Management Accreditation Program) accredited organization through that same association. She has been married to Jim for 16 years, and has 2 daughters, Meagan and Madeline, and her first grandson Elijah. Marla loves to read, cook and run, and is passionate about the tourism industry. |

Jimmy Smith is the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer for FCD Holdings which operates FC Dallas, Toyota Stadium and Toyota Soccer Center, North Texas SC, FCD Youth, MoneyGram Soccer Park and the National Soccer Hall of Fame Experience. He has 20 years of experience in the sports and entertainment industries. Jimmy also sits on the FC Dallas Foundation Board and serves as the Treasurer. The Foundation strives to positively impact the health and well-being of underserved youth through sports. In his role as COO/CFO, Jimmy oversees the operations and finance for the professional team, events at Toyota Stadium (such as concerts, NCAA football games and international soccer matches), management of 36 soccer fields, 200+ FCD Youth teams, 10 Academy teams and affiliate clubs located throughout the United States, Costa Rica and Mexico. Jimmy began his career in public accounting focusing on real estate, financial services and sports & entertainment, with clients such as the Texas Rangers, Dallas Stars, Dallas Mavericks and the American Airlines Center. Jimmy served as the American Airlines Center’s Director of Finance for six years before joining FCD Holdings in 2010. Jimmy attended Texas A&M University receiving a Master of Science in Accounting and played for the Aggie basketball team. Jimmy was named the high school basketball player of the year, Texas Mr. Basketball, by Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. In 2018, Jimmy received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Texas A&M University Mays Business School. Jimmy lives in Plano with wife, Laura, and their three sons. Jimmy is passionate about sports and the opportunities sports provides to the community, youth and general well-being of his own young sons, whom he now coaches in soccer and basketball. |

Texas Big Star Half Marathon

Paul is a Founding Trustee of the North Texas Community Giving Foundation (NTXCF). As a practicing attorney, Paul is responsible for much of the legal work for NTXCF. Paul is a founding member of Simon | Paschal PLLC, a business and employment law firm located in Dallas, Texas. He is also very involved in the legal community. Paul has served as the Chairman of the Dallas Association of Young Lawyers’ Foundation, a 501(c)(3), and President of the Dallas Association of Young Lawyers. Paul graduated from Hope College in Holland, Michigan and then received his JD from Michigan State University College of Law. Paul and his wife, Julie, moved to Frisco in 2010. Paul actively supports his wife’s love for running and he has watched six full marathons and multiple Ironmen races and has even started to run a little himself. Paul serves as the race director of the Texas Big Star Half Marathon & 5K. |

FISD Success Stories: Student Athletes

Matt Wixon serves as the sports information director for Frisco ISD, and prior to that, he spent 18 years at The Dallas Morning News as a sports writer and columnist. During his career as a journalist, he covered everything from youth sports to the Super Bowl, NBA Finals and NCAA football and basketball championships. Wixon was named the Texas High School Coaches Association's Sports Writer of the Year in 2013, and In his final year at The Dallas Morning News in 2017, he was named Media Person of the Year by the Dallas chapter of the National Football Foundation. In 2019, his first novel was published -- "Fourth Down in Texas." He has three sons with his wife, Janell, who is a teacher in Frisco ISD. |
